Question

Are meds really necessary, or is it just a way for psychaiatrists to keep you comming back ? Im starting to wonder this. See a shrink and when I talk about my problems, he is in a hurry to give me a script and shoo me out the door.

Maybe, though they probably help as well.

I know when I say the psychiatrist, they immediatly gave me meds, that's why I left, and never came back nor took any of the meds perscribed.
Cry as I may, but these tears won't wash you away...

imo it depends on the reason. imo some things do need to be treated with meds. i don't think they're a cure-all or anything... n very often even things that need treated with meds also need treated with other things.
i also think though that some pdocs/dr's in general.... push meds far too often. because they don't feel comfortable dealing with mental health stuff... because they're not trained in how to deal with them... because of financial reasons... etc.
ask them what other options u have... or get a referral... or ask why they r just going to give u meds....
good luck :grnstar:

I'm beginning to wonder if this is just kind of the way of the psychiatrist? He gives me meds, talks to me like he's in a huge hurry, doesn't seem to interested, but my psychologist is so great and patient and totally opposite. I talked to her about him (they work in the same building) and she said he was weird to her too, and that it was just the way he was. So, psychiatrists just might be weird like that? There are definite interactions between neurotransmitters and medicine that help regulate those that are released in excess or too little are available, or some other malfunction, and there are so many different meds that the "right" one might be the last one you try, so don't give up yet!

I'm not sure what part of the world you're in, but here psychiatrists have the role of prescribing meds, and the more talking sort of stuff is done by psychologists or other types of psychotherapist (usually that is, - there are psychiatrists who do talking stuff, but that's unusual).

Are meds "necessary"? Well that depends on what's wrong! I've found meds very helpful (once I found the right drug, which takes a long time of trial and error) and I haven't found talking much use. But there are many here who have the opposite experience.

If you're not happy about the kind of treatment you are being offered, then you definitely have every right to ask for something else. They can't insist that you take meds, except in very extreme circumstances.

Good luck

My experience has been like Laura's... meds have been very helpful to me, but it's taken a looooong time to figure out something that helps. Talking hasn't been completely pointless for me, just almost completely so. :-?

I live in Westmoreland county Pennsylvania. The mental health facility here is weird . There are no other therapists or doctors I can see. The one therapist I saw just repeated everything from the last 3 sessions. it was the usual of bringing up my past and reminding me of the horrors that went with it when I was more worried about my future. Id leave the place more upset than when I went in.
Like I said, I tried talking to the Doctor about things and he just gives me a script and says "See ya in a month". He knows too I had a battle with drugs and he keeps giving me more ritalin and Oxypam. Yea, the two things I loved mixing with alcohol. I just flush them. My toilet gets to swallow them these days.
I dont feel my problems are to be cured or curbed with meds. I just need a good strong support system.
