to be able to deal with any emotion in a healthy way.

what about ytou/ you ask all these cool , insightfull questions but dont answer tham yourself. im not being harsh, just intrested.

"Coping" to me means to be able to live, to be able to accept any major event without an extreme reaction. I (obviously) don't cope well with crises but also on the other side, if there is a major *happy* event, I find that hard to deal with. Any strong emotion really.

I used to think coping meant just struggling along, that I was coping, I was still here despite everything. But I wasn't coping then, just existing.

It means learning to accept my emotions and to manage my reaction to them.

that's an interesting question.
I think that originally coping just meant to be able to get through, you know, like survive or something.
but now it has taken on a greater meaning and implies quality of life as well, I think just because what used to be working on "coping" has now become working on "living"

ok, well for me it means being able to accept and let things go, to have a reasonable level of happiness, to not be hurting myself to deal with situations/feelings, to not be afraid of emotions and to take positive risks turning them into challenges: not giving up, to keep going when you need to hang in there.

to me, coping means being able to encounter things and not let them becoming overwhelming, or if they do overwhelm for a while being able to push off and then get on with relative contentment.

though my definition of coping differs with whatever i'm having problems doing at the mmoent. a few months ago i would have said that coping was not cutting, now i say it is being able to maintain a reasonable level of contentment, and no letting things become overwhilming.

i sortof have a few levels of coping:
1) not wanting to die right then and there or actively being suicidal
2) being functional as a person in the real world
3) actually being an honestly happy person.

whenever one of my friends asks me if i'm ok, i always ask her to define ok. those are pretty much our three standard definitions.
