One of the best ways i have found to cope is through art of all types.


Draw your emotion if you can do visual art.

Graffiti a piece of printer paper for your wall in your room.

Pick an instrument and learn a scale or two and play, it will relieve tension and make you improve at something that can become a very intricate part of your life and a great improvement to you. The pentatonic blues scale is a very good one.

Write lyric poetry (lyric poetry being poetry about emotion...lyrics are not nesecarily set to music).

Combine talent with poetry and talent with music into songwriting.


Do things that occupy your mind and your body because if they are expressing your negative emotions then they cannot be expressed through negative actions.

I love doing art as well. I sew too.

I have the artistic ability of a tree. But yes, doodles, writing (I do lots of LRP and my TT is on the up again so I have plenty to write for) and even singing (or perhaps in my case that should be sinning) are good distrations.

I also find sudoku quite useful.

during the darkest, most difficult times in my (younger) life, art WAS my therapy. it wasn't so much drawing to express myself.. it was something to throw myself into. dont think about your life, put everything into the paper.

all the same, i used it as a coping method. a highly effective and apparently healthy one.

but then people said how good i was at it and i went to art school for awhile and learned the right way to draw and blah blah blah. it went from "way to deal with crappyness" to "skill, and possible career path."

i guess the point is i got better at drawing but less inspired to do so.

anyway i dropped out of art school and now i work in a totally non-art-related field (the healthcare field! oh boy!) and drawing is more something i used to do then something i do now.

might start again tho.

izz - I can relate to how 'training' can effect the meaning and inspiration behind the creative arts - before I started training in dance seriously I had all the inspiration for my own way of moving and ideas for choreography that u could imagine - the more I trained the more I begun dancing somebody else rather than myself - I still dance, I still want it for my career and for my life...but i'm having to re-learn how to ditch other peoples superimposed notions of what dance is and discover what MY dance is, all over again ...
I hope you can manage to do the same with Art, because the creative arts really do heal parts of the mind and soul I don't think other things can reach deep enough to find

well I'm a sort of musician, composer, something like that, but I find it quite hard to use that as a way of coping cos I'm not getting ideas! I keep thinking about so many classical composers have been able to write optimistic & upbeat music when their personal lives were going disastrously (like Beethoven doing his 2nd symphony when he was considering suicide) but i'm the opposite - when I feel really bad I dry up.
i should probably take up something I've never done before, that might be a better idea.

yeah... it's great... really takes your mind of things.. and if it's too tough you can leave it and come back... i use www.websudoku.com if i can't find one in the paper... it's great... and i think it qualifies as art...
