afraid to sleep

Post by swanfaerie » Fri Mar 03, 2006 7:53 am

how to i get myself to go upstairs to bed and go to sleep when i'm afraid of nightmares and waking up all night? i know it's not rational to try to stay awake all night to avoid the nightmares cuz i have to be at work in the morning.

but i'm so afraid to sleep. and when i do get to sleep i can't stay asleep. :-?

what helps me with nightmares is to write out, or just think out what i am afraid of before i go to sleep, because most of the time we dream about things that are within our subconcious, not things right on top of our minds. also, try spraying your bed lightly with febreze or a comforting scent, drinking bedtime tea and getting really comfy. it always helps me :)

I had that for awhile after my assault. I know its part of ptsd (post tramatic stress disorder). It's completely normal it happens to a lot of people. Watching nice movies or reading helps. Writing also helps for me too. Talking to a couselor is helpful too.

i actually mentioned what i am about to write in the workshop as a little titbit of info for anyone with sleeping problems, but i stumbled across your post and thought it might be at home here too :).

basically someone bought me an alarm clock one christmas and although it looked cool i never really unpacked it.

one night i couldn't sleep, my thoughts were racing and images kept popping into my mind that were very disturbing (sort of like nightmares but when i'm awake). anyway, i started sleeping with the TV on mute after that because i hated the complete darkness of my room.

another few nights later and i stumbled across the clock. i unpacked it and turns out its a clock that lights up and gently eases from colour to colour, it's very soothing and not too bright.

i highly reccomend this to anyone with sleep issues because a completely dark room can be intimidating and often bring on nightmares as you start imagining things more in a dark room.

also the soothing colours (and the fact the clocks kinda squidgy and nice to touch :) ) help you to relax and bring on sleep!

http://www.iwantoneofthose.com - the exact clock i have can be bought from there, i believe it's called a mood clock or something.

hope this might help.

Soothing coloured lights sounds good. Lavender sachets or oil on your pillow is also very calming.

I hope you get some better sleep soon.
