Over-quoting IRL articles; a safety issue?

Post by kiwi33 » Fri Jun 26, 2009 8:59 am

A recent thread on main contained an extensive quotation from a local newspaper concerning the thread topic. Although the OP had removed all specific identifying details, it took me less than a minute to do a Google search (using the non-specific details as a search string) to retrieve the full article, including highly confidential details of the thread topic.

I have discussed this with the OP by PM and she has deleted the quotation.

So, a respectful suggestion to all; please be careful about how much you quote from non-BUS sites in your posts - safety is pretty important I think.

As a staff member, I want to agree with this post... this matters and has been an issue more than once. Because newspaper articles are available online, it is quite easy to find an unedited version of anything that is partially posted here.

That doesn't mean you CAN'T post things from newspapers. It just means you need to be aware of how much information you are sharing and ok with that. It is always a risk to have your personal information identifiable.
