my account was deleted, but i got it back up for the most part. some of my posts still seem to be "guest, but i've gotten back 5600+ of them by manipulating mysql. i also recreated my account and gave myself admin powers again. mysql is my friend.

the board went down about noon, and was back up by 3 or 4. it would have been sooner but i'm at work and had to keep taking tech support calls in between trying to fix things.

We had a few more newcomers to #bus than usual because of the board being down. I'm glad people found the channel.

Thanks deb.

Hello,

It has come to our concern that a student at our school has used an opening in our security to hack this site. He was caught in the act and has been suspended from school for 2 weeks. We are sorry for any damages caused by this student. His computer privileges for the year have been revoked. Once again we are very sorry for what happened. I tried to post earlier, but I couldnt access the forum as the IP was blocked. I cant show you how sorry we really are. We are increasing security on our network so this will never happen again.

Also, the student confessed that he did it to "prove a point". He says that this forum wasnt "patched" to protect itself. The patch is available here http://www.phpbb.com. I hope this helps prevent other incidents like this.

1. sane, civil people make their points by sending a polite email. they don't wreak havoc on a bulletin board that hundreds of people rely upon.

2. i have spoken to the sysadmin at the school involved, and i am waiting to hear back from him about this. i do not know who you are and i don't think i've had any communication from you. you are also posting fomr a compcast address and not an official school address, so i am skeptical about you being involved in the incident on an official basis. i have left my cell number with the people involved, so if you want to verify your identity to me you can phone me.

3. an apology is not enough.

There are non-lame script kiddies? Oh, well, shows him. Maybe he picked a self-help board because he thought it would be full of lusers who'd be clueless about dealing with it. He has been pwned.

... and instead he gets deb. I almost feel sorry for him/her. And by "almost" I mean not at all. "Clueless" is really not the word that applies here.
