Post by marshmallowfluff » Mon Feb 02, 2009 7:00 pm

or whatever its called.
i dont know how to word this right.
a few members have a load of them dragons in their sig. its not so bad when they're eggs, but when they hatch it stretches the page, making it hard to read some posts. its kind of bugging me.
is there anyting that can be done about this?

I found a very quick and dirty solution:

If you have XP, add the following line to "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\host":

127.0.0.1 dragcave.net

Saves having to wait several minutes for those dragons to load.

Not sure where vista keeps the host file though.

Alternatively you could use your firewall or router to block the address.

If you use Firefox, do a Google search for an addon called 'Greasemonkey', it has a load of scripts that alter how php forums appear, one is a signature purger. I've never tried the latter though, as signatures can be useful.

if it's only a few people, you might want to pm them and ask them to edit their sigs. a few pics is ok but 10+ are annoying for most people i think.

You can also adblock with with the Firefox adblock extension. That's what I do because they irritate me because they take up a lot of room.

Using notepad to edit the 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\host' file as per my previous instruction should still work in Vista. Except, to edit the file in vista you need to run Notepad as Administrator.

Basically the edit redirects any connections you try to make to dragcave.net back to your PC (127.0.0.1), effectively breaking the link. You'll then get the little icons with red 'x's.

Close internet explorer

Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories

Right click on Notepad and select 'Run as Administrator'

You can then open the hosts file from Notepad. i.e. File -> Open. In the Open File window: select Computer, 'C:' Disk and navigate to the folder that contains hosts. Don't forget to change the file filter from 'Text Documents (.txt) to 'All files).

After you make the edit, restart Internet Explorer. Then goto Tools -> Delete Browsing History and select the option for deleting 'Temporary Internet Files'.

edit: It's also advisable to make a copy of the original hosts file and save it somewhere safe, just incase you need to revert back.
