I have no idea why the edit thing sometimes shows and sometimes doesn't, but I have wondered.

As for PMs disappearing...The person might have had their account deleted? When someone is deleted (not deactivated, deleted), their PMs go away. Which is sad cause I lost some I really wanted to keep...

If someone asks to be deleted then we explain that deletion is permanent and cannot be undone, that if they come back they will not be able to search for their posts, let alone attach them to their name again, that they will lose pms etc. We usually try to persuade people to be deactivated, which just loses them access to the account but leaves the account intact, but if they're sure they want to be deleted then that's what we do. It's sad, because I think sometimes people insist on deletion when they're angry and hurting, and I delete them thinking "I'm pretty sure you will regret this", but if that's what they say they want, I dont' have the right to override their decision.

It marks you as having edited your post if someone replied before you edited. If you're the last post in a thread, it won't mark it as edited.

The change starts now.

If in doubt, don't

If I post something, and then edit it to fix spelling or whatever, BEFORE the next post, then it won't show that I've edited. But if someone posts before I've edited, then it WILL show up in my edited post.

With pm's, if I edit a pm I sent say, yesterday, and the person hasn't read it yet, then they will get a second pm. If I delete a pm that I've written, then the person will still get the notification, but when they click on the link it no longer exists.

Not sure if that helps, or answers the question or not.
