I think I'm losing control of this

Post by Enola » Thu Mar 01, 2007 4:57 pm

For me SI is a coping mechanism to regain control. If emotions get too intense, it brings me back to a balance. If the numbness gets to intense, it helps me feel. If I have a panic attack, it diverts my focus and helps me snap out of it.

But it's losing its "magic" and things are getting worse. I have to do it more often and more times. How do I stop this? I feel like I'm on a roller coaster and it's going out of control?

hey i know what u mean....been there...

some suggestions i hope will work...

i think part of it is just acknowledging that it is getting worse which u already have, which is good...

then, find a way...which is what u are trying...

for me, i use a lot of distractions...like things i like to do...(art, poetry, sleeping, music, etc)...

also i don't know if this would work...my T once told me i should try to do it outwardly than to myself...so i tried that and threw my phone on me wall and destroyed it, and made some cracks in the wall

friends have also told me to punch a pillow or if u have a punching bag to punch that

hope some of these are useful

The only way I've found to stop the roller coaster is to stop si. Even if I then fall back into it, if I at least manage to not for a few weeks, when I start again, it's not as seveere or as frequent as before.

Find other coping mechanisms - and there are ones that do work - and force yourself to gain some control over your SI.

Tell yourself.. you will never SI on Tuesdays. So for an entire 24 hours you will be using and practicing other ways to cope.

This doesn't mean you automatically do SI on other days.. it's just forcing you to gain some control over it.

Then make it Tuesdays and Fridays.
