I need some assistance. My sister wants to take me to a day spa for our birthdays.
Sounds like a great idea huh? The problem is my arms. On my shoulders I have old scars some of which are quite thick and ugly. What do you say when people ask you about your scars? A girl working at Glamour Shots made a big fuss when she saw them and I felt completely humiliated because she knew they weren’t the result of me ‘being clumsy at work’.
I don’t want to pass this up but I want to be prepared to deal with people’s reactions.
What should I say?

Hi. A spa trip sounds lovely, it'll be a shame if you can't relax due to worrying about this.
First, it's possible no one will say anything at all. Not everyone is so upfront (or, to put it another way, rude) as to ask a stranger something so personal and you might be lucky enough to avoid these these types.
If someone does ask, how you react is entirely up to you - you can tell him or her to [bleep] off because it's none of his or her business, you could make up some sort of ludicrous but amusing excuse or you could be upfront and honest "I used to self-injure" or something. Do what feels comfortable for you and what feels right in the situation.
There's a topic about this in the sourcebook. It has heaps of possible responses. Here it is:

Good luck at the spa, I hope you have a lovely time.

It's more than acceptable to wear a t-shirt to a spa. I'd wear a fitted one over my swimming costume and if anyone asked just say I wasn't comfortable showing so much skin to strangers, or that I felt more able to relax with less on show. After all the point is to relax.
Good luck, and have a great time at the spa.

Thank you for the link Mydriasis. It's a wonderful list and a bit of fun too.
Notevenpretty, thanks for the idea, I saw a suit in the window at the boating shop that has a bit of sleeve on it. I think I'll buy it and be compleltly relaxed for a day of pampering.
