Ideas for my box

Post by Oblivion » Tue Jun 07, 2005 6:44 pm

I am trying to make a box of dstraction. You know the kinda thing that only gets opened in emergencies. I have no idea what to put in it.

Any ideas?

candy, of course you'd have to replace it every so often.
I don't know if you have easy access to transportation, but you could put a gift card to your favorite store in the box and go shopping as your distraction (just make sure the card isn't going to lose its value before you use it)

My wonderful friend sent me a care package when I moved house and was feeling homesick. She put in some photos, a chilled-out mixtape of our favourite songs, some chocolate, candles and a tea-bag!!
It's the best emergency box ever!

Red paint and a small paintbrush or a red marker. You can draw on yourself instead of actually hurting yourself. Just make sure it's washable.

puzzles like the rubik's cube
going along with Vows' suggestion of coloring books you could also include fingerpaints--basically any kid's activity that you liked when you were little (the sort adults still like but are too embarrassed to admit  )
nice stationary, pens, and a book of addresses so you can catch up on correspondance
the name/number of a massage therapist near you (and enough money/certificate for a massage)
marbles

Mine has my favourite films, a big book of coping stuff, and stuff to make me feel better, a stuffed toy to cuddle, and various things to do like magazines to read or to make collages with and stuff like that.

Also, I asked people to write me a letter to make me feel better and i wasnt allowed to read it until a crisis. Its a really nice thing to have an unread letter from a friend when you are really down.

let's see... *gets out her emergency box and looks into it*

mine's got
a stuffed doggie,
one of those bottles where you put hot water in it and use it to warm up for feet or to put on an upset tummy (sorry - first language isn't english, dunno what they're called!),
one of those little rubber balls that bounce about (see through with a turtle inside!),
a collection of really beautiful, soothing postcards,
the scarily vast list of coping strategies,
something a busser wrote once called "when you feel you can't go on"
some photos of some kittens i once raised with the bottle (those were good times)
paradoxis' list of reasons for living,
a journal
a journal just for pozzies
and on the bottom a list of some stuff that i could do in case all of the above didn't help

i used to have scented candles in there, but i used em all up - but everything still smells like vanilla...
oh yeah, and all of the above fits into a normal shoe-box...
hope some of this inspired you.

One of my best friends made my box a few years back for me, which just doubles the effect it has. Pulling out a gift from someone you love is like a big hug.

Anyway. mine includes:
*Silly putty, which I <3 SO much, I am playing with it as I speak.
*These crazy, crayola magic clay thingers
*A "compliment packet" filled with good things about me that my friends and family made together
*An "inside joke packet" filled with jokes that to this day make me smile
*A book with little letters in it, like Jaded_melody suggested
*a book of poetry

I think it is really nice to have other people contribute to your box, because it's so loving and unexpected.

Hey, I'm a bit late, but anyway ! My doc helped me make my box so I thought I'd write down what's in it...

- Letters from friends that know
- colouring pens
- a mix CD of stupid music (don't worry be happy...makes me laugh!)
- my favourite book when I was a kid
- string, well sort of string...coloured stuff that you can make things out of...
- tea bags! :D
- bouncy ball
- cigs
- list of reasons to live
- chocolate :D

and a rug, but that isn't in the box...Anyway, have fun making it, that's half the point of it! :)

this is a good idea. i need to make one of these. i'll let you all know what's in mine after i make one.
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow;
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain;
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there; I did not die.

i've got in mine:

:redstar: a sketch pad and pencils
:redstar: a lined note pad
:redstar: coloring pencils, felt tips
:redstar: 2 mixed CD's of my favorite songs, one to cheer me up (happy rock music) and one to relax me (classical, relaxation music)
:redstar: 3 chocolate bars (my faves)
:redstar: a little purple teddy that i can squeeze
:redstar: a five pounds (so i can buy myself a little treat to cheer myself up)
:redstar: a little bull stress ball
:redstar: a non-perm red felt marker (for the red marker trick)
:redstar: incence and candles
:redstar: my friends mobile numbers/ samaritans number/helplines
:redstar: reasons why i am a good person
:redstar: a little book where all my friends have written a page each about why i am a wonderful person (i read this when i feel unloved because i know this is not fake)
:redstar: letters from my dead granny (written when she was alive of course), letters from friends, charity letters (they take my mind off myself and onto other people in need)
:redstar: "lucid living" by timothy freke (a philiospher), a little book about how we shouldn't let anything get us down because none of its real and we can control everything we believe in.
:redstar: pictures of me and my family having a good time/baby photos
:redstar: two of my favorite movies- girl, interrupted and my first mister. i know these are sad movies but they make me feel better, less alone in the world that someone cared enough to make a movie to explain to everyone how it is for us.
:redstar: bright blue nail varnish
:redstar: and finally, an orange SLEVELESS (so i can show myself i am not ashamed of my scars) t-shirt with "SHINE ON SISTER!" in big letters on the front... even when i feel frumpy and ugly this cheers me up because my mum gave it to me. I wear it in my room on my own when i am going through my box.

I use black metal case with a lock on it under my bed (the key is behind the photo of my dad and my sister sitting on a rock together)

and when i go through my box i repeat to myself

I am a good person
I am loved
I am beautiful inside and out
I can get through this
I am strong
I will not be dragged down

:) really works for me
