'welcome to BUS' e-mail

Post by xanemicroyaltyx » Tue Jun 07, 2005 9:06 pm

okay, well a few weeks ago a newbie on BUS e-mailed me through the board and asked me if i'd be able to explain the board to her. anyway, the e-mail itself turned out slightly longer than i would have liked  but i was wondering if anyone would like to read through it and pick/edit bits?

i just thought that maybe itcould be a step towards a standard e-mail?

just an idea anyway

hey there,

firstly i wanted to say welcome to BUS :). i'm emma *waves* and i'm the
moderator for the 'welcome wagon' on BUS [the project to help new users fit in].

i know how big and scary BUS can seems at first and i'm glad that you felt you
could reach out and ask for help finding your way around :).

Basically, BUS is divided up into a number of different sections. The first
thing that you should do before you start reading posts and positng yourself is
to look at the 'before you post' forum. It's the first forum listed on the main
page and explains the philolosophies behind BUS and the rules that everyone is
expected to abide by. The rules aren't big and controlling, they're just there
to help everyone feel safe whilst using the board and help stop being from being
triggered or upset.

Once you've read through that forum what you do is up to you.

Bodies Under Siege- viewforum.php?f=1

is the main board of the site where you can post questions, ask for support,
support others and meet new people.

Coping- viewforum.php?f=15

in my opinion is a really useful board. here you can let out all of your
feelings. it's a place to cry a place to wish a place to let out all of the
things that you cannot say in real life. it includes lots of helpful ideas to
help you deal with selfharm [si] and the feelings and processes associated with
is.

another great board is

Distractions- viewforum.php?f=6

which, along with

Random Weirdness- viewforum.php?f=28

is there to help you find fun things to do if you're feeling triggered or need
to give yourself some head space for awhile.

i don't know where you stand si-wise or what you are hoping to get from the
board so if i seem presumptuous then i'm sorry...

other boards are:

down the long day's arc- viewforum.php?f=24

- a board for users past college age

life after self harm- viewforum.php?f=16

- a board for anyone who has reached the stage where they feel they are able to
make a commitment to stop selfharming

expressions:

- a place for musical, artistic, poetic expression and all other forms of
creativity :).

One of the more popular boards is 'place'. in some ways it's like livejournal
in that once you create a thread, that is yoour thread- your 'place' and you can
write in it whatever you want, within the boundaries of place [which are more
liberal than on some of the other boards]

viewforum.php?f=19

There are also member-only boards, which you can choose to join by clicking on
'groups' at the top of your screen and applying to join [such as please be
healthy and the debating society].

The board also has a board specifically for family and friends of selfharmers,
as well as being a place to ask questions/discuss the issues involved with other
people in your life and self harm.

I'm sorry if this is alot of information to take in- BUS is a huge community-
but i hope that it has helped you gain an overview of things.

One more thing to mention about the board is private messaging. If you'd
rather, instead of e-mailing, you can private message [pm] people by clicking on
'messages' and sending a message to a particular user.

I hope that i've been able to help you understand bus a bit better :).

If you have any more questions feel free to e-mail/pm me, or if you'd just like
a chat, that'd be nice too.

much love,

emma xxx
