pictures in sigs

Post by sine nomine » Thu May 12, 2005 3:04 am

okay, guys, i've asked about a million times that you keep pictures in signatures under 8k so that dialup members can get pages more quickly. i know it's easy to think that your picture is just a little over and doesn't matter, but it really does matter. if everyone has one 15K picture in their sig, that's 300k of images on one page of topic -- that's a lot to download at 56k. basically, people on dialup have to wait a minute or more to get the page loaded. and that's just 15k; some people have 40 or 50k sig pictures.

i've asked about this a few times, and now i'm afraid i'm going to have to get proactive about it. if your sig pic is over 8k, there's a very real chance that it will be deleted from your sig by an admin. you'll be able to put a new one in, but it will have to be under the 8k limit.

i hate to do this, but i've been asking people to find smaller images for the better part of a year now.

oh, i forgot to say that pictures related to si-free times/medallions/whatever don't count toward your 8k. if you have those and it's not letting you update your profile, let an admin know.

I totally agree with Deb, I'm on 56K, and it does take a long time.

Also, if you have an image you want that's over the limit, you could always try to shrink it down. If anyone neds helps with it, PM me the pic, I'll be willing to help out. :)

Now I'm back again, and babe it's gonna work out fine.

Can I have two images in my sig that are 3.7K and 3.8K? They're 7.5K together, so it should be okay... or not?

...thanks for anyone who enlightens me... ^_^

Yeah I think two that are 7.5k in total should be fine. Have you tried putting it in to your sig? If anything's too big it will complain at you, so you'll know.

Yes indeed, the robotic sig-censor is watching you.... :o

someone reminded me that i'd said 10k max, so i'm cool with up to 10k total.

i know it may seem harsh, but it's a huge pain on dialup. i've got cable modem, but i've connected with my phone at near-dialup speeds before and it's excruciating sometimes. it's hugely appreciated when you make the pictures in your signature smaller.

Did you fix it? It's coming up as 6K for me, so it's good.

Something strange is going on here. I just checked the size on your pic, Kaz and my 'puter is telling me that it is 13.2 KB. To check the file size, right click on the pic, right click on properties. Then look at size of file and it will tell you how many kb it is.

LauzJ, the hug counter you have at the moment is a pic!

To put in a pic, first check the filesize is less than 8k ;)
The upload it onto the web somewhere (if it's not already there). Someone techie can tell you more about this if you don't know how - I just put things on my geocities webspace, but some people use photobucket or something.
When it's on the web, in your sig you type

(where obviously you put the URL of your pic. Needn't be jpg, can be gif or png or whatever too).

Any problems, post again and someone will help.
Laura :)

Ok, I need help making it smaller file size then. The thing is: my computer crashed badly a few weeks ago, and Mike doesn't want me to put the programe back on that I do my pictures with until he can get time to look at everything again. The programme makes it pretty easy to do but I can't do fancy stuff.

Is there anyone who can make it smaller and send it to my e-mail ? ( Kazz B @ comcast.net without the spaces). I would really appreciate it. If not I'm sure someone on my msn knows how to do it for me.

According to my computer, it's only gone down from 13 to 12k. But... the sig thing should reject it if it's over 8k. Am puzzled.

I'll email you a further squished version in a minute and you can see if it's ok.

Yeah: I thought it would reject if if it was too big too, so I thought it was ok. :)

Yeah send me a smaller one, thankyou for that. Sorry for the hassle.

Edit: just got it, and it said on my computer it was a smaller file, but uploaded it and it said it was 13K .... *confuzzled*.
