i had to roll back the update because the file is too huge. so now i have to figure out what exactly to do about it. sigh. you may get weird errors -- just pm me if you do.

was updating to 2.0.11. i'm thinking that i may have to set the old board up as an archive and make a new one, which would suck. the problem is that the database update seems to take 6 million years because the database is immense and the updating procedure is too.

btw, there may be problems with searches. unfortunately, i dunno if i can fix that.

not really. i spose i could copy the database file and then try the update elsewhere. the problem is, when i say huge, i mean 2 gigs huge.

i think since we've patched php itself and have another fix in place, we're safe from worms. but gah.

<pessimist>Haven't most of the security problems been with phpBB rather than php itself, though? From what I gather on Slashdot, you do need the phpBB patches as well. Unless that's what you meant.</pessimist>

Is there anyway to split the database such that threads inactive since 2003 get archived separately and become untouchable, but more recent posts remain in the main archive? Would that make the database smaller? Possibly not since I expect that posting has increased exponentially with time, but it's a thought.

smeagol: actually, according to the guys who write phpbb, the biggest problem is php. we were infected, but we've not been re-infected. i might consider splitting off past years, but i'd hate to do that.

zero: i'm not sure how much it would help. probably not much.

*watches php and phpbb guys blame each other* Last time I looked php had a huge thing on the front page "clearing up" any misconceptions about how most problems are problems with php applications, not php itself...

yeah i dl'd and was studying phpBB last night in my boredom without bus, and setup a mySQL server on one of my web servers so i can play a bit. anyway, there seems to have been some fun involved with the patches. deb, i missed bus lots, and id like to just say thank-you for all the hard work you and those who give their time freely put in for all of us.

one thing i did notice, is bus is responding quicker. i dont know if that is my internet, i dont think so, bc i just edited a post and it went real quick. so deb, your hard work made a difference.

you're right -- itis responding more quick;y. that's because the word list was wiped out -- normally, it indexes each word in apost and adds it to a word table for use in searching. that's the onyl thing that got lost (and i suspect why the database update was taking so long). since that table was immense, losing it made thigns a lot faster. that's why you can't search for anything old.

And can we set up a temporary board while the main one is being updated? Just any board would do, I guess, for those who need bus while it's down?
