completly ot...wireless

k i have my laptop connected via a bt voyager100 usb adsl modem. it doesnt like being constanly plugged in to the laptop, if i move, cross my legs or watever it cuts me off a lot of the time. (k i think its my usb ports that are te problem, one quit working alltogether.

i dont want to connect my pc to it cos that means i have to ave pc in living room n no space.

question, can i connect my laptop to a woreless router without first connecting the pc and networking it?

wat do i need to buy?

oh bt sed i can buy a wireless router from them ( but im sure i can find one cheaper if i know wat im looking for) but a net search brings up networking routers n i cant find info for no network just wireless.

From my limited experience with it, you need a wireless router and some kind of wireless net card for your laptop that is either built-in or that fits into the PCMCIA slot (the floppy-looking slot that isn't really a floppy drive). For the PC, you'll need either an external wireless adapter (typically connects to a USB port and looks like a lil antenna) or an internal PCI adapter (is a circuit board that you have to open up the computer to install). You'll need to choose between two net standards depending on what you'll use it for, also.

Wireless G (802.11G) runs at 54 Mbps to 108. Wireless B (802.11B) runs at 11 Mbps. In other words G is faster than B. Now, a typical broadband connection won't go above a max speed of 1.5 Mbps to 3 Mbps. So either network standard is going to hit a bottleneck when it hits your connection because a typical internal network will be hella faster than a broadband connection (wired is typically 100 Mbps).

Also, most Wireless G routers run on both standards, so if you want to get a G router and a B card, you can get a G card later if you want.

Of course, unless you're going to be sharing files over your internal network, I'd go with B since it's cheaper (but not by much).

Setting up the router is quite easy. Usually, you'll have to connect it to a computer to set it up, but other than that, the directions will pretty much step you through it (Linksys writes good directions). From setting it up at work, if you follow the directions you shouldn't have many problems.
