search problem?

Post by Callisto » Wed Jan 07, 2009 11:22 am

I'm having a problem when I try and search for a post of mine from a while back. When I click on the view all posts bit it says there are 1640 pages (or something very similar to that) but when I try to look on the next page or any other page but the first one that shows up it says there are no posts. Why is this?

some of the furthest back posts aren't accessible anymore, becasue they're held onthe old server (or soemthing like that i'm not good technically) but at some point deb is going to transfer them over so that you can read and access the old posts and links.

if it's something more7 recent than that, i've had the same thing happen to me a couple of times, i wonder if it's just that BUS can't cope with a large number of posts to search through, might be easier to try and search more specifically for the post (ie a term in it or something) to see if that gives you less results. i also find that going through the results page by page (tedious i know) makes it work better for a while.

If there is something in particular you want to find, PM me about it. I think that if I go in through some of the admin tools, I may be able to see older posts more easily.

I don't know why the search thing gets bogged down when there are a lot of posts, but I know it happens... it isn't just you.

Actually, the search is broken, and has been for a couple years now.

Yup, I've had the same problems. It used to bug me A LOT when I was still a mod and sometimes really needed to look up old stuff. At least it only bugs me on a personal level these days. I can only say, if in doubt, ask an admin! . They can often help, but it does suck somewhat that search is so rickety and glitchy.

It's been said that there's no <i>real</i> way to fix the search function at this time - possibly because the database is so big.

I don't know PHP well AT ALL, so please don't take that last statement as fact.
