FireFox: How to make reading and posting here a lot easier

Post by sine nomine » Fri Aug 11, 2006 9:53 pm

This is one of a series of posts on how to use FireFox to make reading BUS easier and more fun.

In order to do this, you have to be using FireFox. It's an awesome browser anyway, and you'll forget why you ever wanted to use IE. Go to http://www.mozilla.com/ to get it now. I'll wait.

Okay, good. The beauty of Firefox is that you can install extensions (http://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/extensions/). Ever use a program and wish it had that one nifty feature that would make it absolutely perfect? With FireFox, there's a good chance someone else has had the same thought and written a little add-on to make the feature happen.

This post will eventually include links to all of the nifty FireFox extensions I can think of, and to any posts other people may make about their favourite extensions.

http://userscripts.org/scripts/source/1079.user.js explains how to hide entire sigs and other user info.

http://userscripts.org/scripts/source/1667.user.js explains how to add a quick-reply box to the end of threads.

http://userscripts.org/scripts/source/1894.user.js explains how to automatically load the next page of replies.

If anybody in the BUS community comes across other cool Firefox extensions, please send a PM to a member of the admin team about it so it can be added to this list.

I remember you talking about an addon that allowed you to ignore a user on the boards, deb? Can you link to that and explain about it?

i've got a bunch of screenshots at home just waiting to be put into a post about that one.

other extensions i plan to mention are

remove it permanently, that lets you tell the browser never to show you a particular image or link or other page element (you can tell it, for instance, to never show you that micrwave smilie anywhere on bus ever again)

stylish, that lets you overrule the themes' style sheets and make the pages look how you want them

bbcodextra, which lets you add bbcode just by right-clicking

page title eraser, in case you dont' wnat page titles showing up in the titlebar

foxlingo, a translator

paragrasp, which lets you travel down a page highlighting one paragraph at a time

i've only got about 80 extensions installed, all told. :)

I decide that what this post really needs is Bow to the Fox, so I close the preview tab and double-click on the image name. The bbcode to make it happen magically appears in my post (I could have asked it to give me html instead, btw)
.

That image "Bow to the Fox" just cracks me up - it reminds me of a card I sent my d when she was IP in the CRU in London - loads of mice with 2 cats backed up against a wall, and one cat is saying to the other "don't just stand there - negotiate!"

(That really does make sense to anyone who's ever been to the CRU at Bethlem, honest  )

I've got several more I want to add details on, but I want to make sure there's interest cause it's a fair amount of work writing these posts.

In addition to the extensions I mentioned above, I also want to add info about Greasemonkey scripts to do these things:

Hide avatars
Put unread topics below read topics in the recent posts and my posts pages
Load anpother page worth of posts when you get to the bottom of a page
Prevent long lines or images from making the phpBB window stretch so that you have to scroll
Add a quick reply feature
Add a note to a user

Also, are the detailed instructions and screenshots helpful at all, or should I not bother with them?

The detailed instructions are really helpful. I found the spell check on my own, but it all looked too complicated for me to do it (at least today) but your instructions I could cope with.

I LOVE Forefox ! Thanks Deb, I'm going to try some of these. I'm pretty much a techy dunce but I'll have a go.

Have you installed the smily extension? You need to do that after installing Firefox.

Firefox 2.0 has just been released and it has integrated spellcheckers for text boxes... it's *awesome*.

I've still got that. Are you sure your theme is set to subSilver?

Right now its set to access

Is subsilver like the bluegrey? I remember the dark blue background and bright letters. I liked that one style.

Does anyone know of a (currently working and install-able) userhide or ignore extension for firefox? I've checked all the old links and even googled it, and I haven't come up with anything.

Thanks in advance if you are able to help! :)
