scary spam

Scary spam in place..
I don't have time to post links but there is scary spam in place..not hard to find as no replies. Some of it is graphic.

Feel free to pull me up if this has been considered before but,

Is it possible to require the first post by a new user to be allowed or disallowed by a moderator before it appears on the board?

We do this over on a web board I moderate and it allows us to weed out spammers and link farmers before they can bother other users

It does mean there's a slight delay before new users can see their posts appear though so perhaps that would be a consideration.

I like that idea as well...it could just be the first post or so, and at least that weeds out the spammers...but that might be a little harder to implement when it's a support board...

Much of the spam comes from bots (software applications that run automated tasks over the Net).

Many of the mods (me included) regularly scan the member-list for spam-bots (the indicators are a random user-name and random profile details) and report the details to the admins, who can then deactivate those "members".

Most of the spammers are zapped in that way before they get a chance to post... :) .
