I Think The Search Function Is Broken?

Hi, I'm having trouble with the search function.

It will only show the first page of results of any search I do, and if I try to view the next page it says 'sorry you cannot use the search function right now, please try in a few minutes' or something like that. I've tried a few times in the last 10 minutes or so and it's not changed. Thought I would point it out in case admin didn't know about it.

The search function used to do the same for me but it works these days. Strange

If I get the cannot use message, I just leave it a minute or two and refresh the page. Sometimes takes a couple of attempts, but that usually works for me.

SUpposedly the database is really, really big. And the search tables need to be rebuilt to be compatible with the new board and I figure that'd take a pretty long time (and drag down the board; search was partially taken offline because a few years ago when we had that time of Epic Board Slowness, that was the culprit)

I'm sorry if that explanation is difficult, it's 2:15 in the morning and my brain is currently broken.

My understanding of things, which is limited...

Deb has talked about redoing the search tables and such, but didn't want to do it too quickly because 1) it will take a long time and lot of work and 2) I think the board may have to go offline while she does it, and she didn't want to do it without planning for that and giving everyone fair warning first.

So... search is tricky. It hasn't worked right for a long time, but it is working even less right now, since the transition to the new board. I can generally find newer stuff, but old stuff just doesn't seem to come up correctly.

If there is something in particular you are hunting for, it can sometimes work to post a question on Main, because people can sometimes remember the thread or topic you want and help you find it.
