WHY??
if deb hates capital letters, why must the BB in http://buslist.org/phpBB be capitalized to access the site? it's a travesty, hate the shift key.

Re: WHY??
hee!
it's because i'm a geek and *nix is case-sensitive. they named it phpBB, so i'm respecting that naming. i find capital letters aesthetically unappealing, but i'm weird.

deb will hate lc's dads handwriting then capslock was welded on....
is it possible to have a redirect set up? or is that difficult/complicated/expensive/against deb principles?

Bookmark it. That way you don't have to worry about typing the site name. Or at least that's what I do. But I'm lazy.

Re: WHY??
i've done symbolic links before; i think there's still one from busmail.org/phpBB to buslist.org/phpBB. i guess there's no real reason not to make another one except i haven't done it yet.
sarah, what the stuff in that message does is simple:
cd $wherever-you-put-the-forum
"cd" means change directory. the rest tells it which directory you want to change to. it's the command-line equivalent of opening a new folder.
ln -s ./phpBB ./phpbb
ln means make a link. -s means make a symbolic link, which works like a shortcut does in windows.
./phpBB means "look in this directory that i'm in right now and use the thing called phpBB for this command"
./phpbb means "the shortcut file you should make will be in this directory and called phpbb"
so translated it means "make a shortcut for the thing called phpBB in the folder i'm in right now and call it phpbb."

Re: WHY??
And the awesome part is I understood the whole thing the first time it was said... There is hope that even I will be able to understand Unix someday! (ok, really simple stuff...).

Re: WHY??
NobodyToYou (that sounds odd - may I call you NTB?), of course there's hope. Once I'd gotten used to it, UNIX started making a lot more sense than Windows ever did.
sine nomine (that sounds even odder - like even my greeting contradicted itself ), no wonder you hate capitals if you're a UNIX geek.

heh. i've been a unix geek since 1991 or so. i'm fiercely devoted to emacs, i read all of my email in mutt, and i usually, if i browse form work, use elinks. i don't hate caps; i just io
the $ thing is a bit odd, though. in most shells a $ indicates an environment variable. what shell are you using?

Re: WHY??
Wow, you've been using UNIX for longer than I've been alive. I think that deserves some respect.
Asplosion! You're fiercely devoted to EMACS, yet you shun GNUS?
I love mutt, used it right up until I switched to Gmail. I'm not really devoted - quite happy using vi if on someone else's machine - but EMACS is my editor of choice too. I just love the fact that my text editor comes bundled with a psychotherapist. ^_^
Sorry, the '$' wasn't meant to be taken literally - I was using it in the slang sense, intended to mean 'replace with appropriate value', given that I don't know where you keep your www directory. Maybe it's a teenage thing.
