OT- Firefox hanging/crashing. Anyone else?

Post by Chimera » Sat Apr 05, 2008 3:40 am

I've been using Firefox since it was released, and I love it. I don't ever want to go back to using IE, but I'm beginning to seriously consider it. For the last several weeks, Firefox has been hanging and sometimes crashing completely several times a day. I haven't done anything new to my computer, have not downloaded anything new/different, added any new extensions or add-ons to Firefox. It just suddenly began behaving like IE used to in the bad old days. Mozilla doesn't seem to be recognizing this much officially, and I'm baffled because FF has always been very stable and easy to use, until the last month or so when it became possessed by demons. This is seriously affecting my online experience, and it's becoming very difficult to use the Interweb because damn near everything seems to cause FF to hang or crash. I'm getting *very* pissed off. Is this happening to anyone else? Am I crazy? Is there anything I can do to make it quit doing this, short of waving the white flag and going back to IE again?

Help me.

I don't really know what to do about it, but I've been having the same problem. It's happened to me a few times in the last 24 hours. I've restarted and that seems to have fixed it, but other than that, I'm clueless.

Hopefully someone comes along with more knowledge about the situation than me.

As someone who only uses firefox, I haven't experienced any problems. *knocks on wood* What version of windows are you using?

I also haven't had problems and I'm kusing firefox on linux.

A couple of suggestions:

1. Firefox 3 is due out in June - that might fix it if you can hang on.

2. You could try reinstalling firefox in case it has got corrupted somehow.

3. You could try setting up a new profile and using that, in case it's something in your profile settings which isn't working.

4. pinky has already mentioned using opera. Doesn't have the firefox extensibility, but it's also a free good browser.

5. You could try using seamonkey. It shares the same rendering engine as firefox, but includes email and a calendar and stuff. It also supports firefox extensions (at leat some of them).

6. You could try flock. Flock is a variant of firefox, set up for multimedia and social networking. It therefore supports the same extensions and renders pages the same way. It's just it has a load of other stuff to make facebook, youtube, flickr etc easier to use.

The change starts now.

If in doubt, don't

Firefox is version 2.0.0.13, and I'm running Vista as my OS. :yuck: I don't think this is part of Vista's general crappiness, though, because I've been running FF on it for quite a long time, and have only begun to have this problem very recently. Thank you all for your replies, especially Gwylan. If the new version of Firefox doesn't fix this, I'm going to try one of the other browsers that you suggested, because I *really* hate IE.

Vista? :yuck:

While it may have been running with vista just fine up till now, maybe you downloaded stuff from windows that made the problem?

As a vista user and an FF user, I have yet to see any problem with the two of them together but I have noticed vista is prone to playing nicely with others one minute then deciding it doesn't want to play with anyone the next

blech. ff has been acting up for me, too, for the last month or so.

there's a beta version of firefox 3.0 (or maybe it's 3.0.4) that's out and is supposed to be a good answer to firefox's troubles. at least, so i hear. i have a mac, so i've just reverting to safari for my main browser until i have time to really deal with it, but i have heard really good things about the firefox beta 3.0......
