Windows Vista...What We Know

So I decided to start this and put it here since it a techy issue.


I recently got a new puter and as hard as I tried, I was unable to get one with XP and had to settle for Vista.

The bugs in the system are numerous. Anyone with Vista will be able to attest to that.

I guess the point of putting this here is to talk about Vista, ways anyone has found to get around various problems (i have only had one but will cover that in a minute) and maybe a place to cover questions of what will undoubtedly be causing problems for more an more people in the future.


The only problem I have had that I have managed to fix was getting online.
Don't everyone jump on me and tell me to get rid of AOL. I intend to do that just as soon as I can. Likely in August.
Anyway
If you have aol, the soft ware you have now will not work with vista.
You must have AOL OpenRide to get on. Of course this can be found in many places just like the older versions. It is in a red package. If you are planning on getting a new puter and have aol you might as well hunt the disk down now.

I bought a laptop with vista on and after a day of using it decided to put Ubuntu linux on. Best thing I ever did.

I found vist slow and full of so much stuff I didnt need. Its also worth doing a search on the DRM in vista scared the pants off me

Well yes, my first thought was that it's AOL that's buggy, not Vista ;)

More generally, this is the problem - not bugs, but some companies have been shockingly bad at updating software to cope with, or even simply recognise Vista. I tried to install Tesco's Internet Dial Up on my parents' new laptop, but it refused to work with Vista, because it checked the operating system against a hardcoded list, and refused to work (this also means it won't work with other non-Windows platforms either, even though dial-up will work with any computer system in existence - it's just stupid Tesco programmers putting an artifical restriction in there).

I'm still on Windows 2000 for my desktop, though my newer laptop has XP.

my new laptop has vista too. altho i'm not techie enuf to figure out what is and isn't working, i need to get mozilla up again (i still despise IE).

i think part of my problem is that i haven't been able to delete all the free cr*p or 30-day free trial cr*p that was pre-installed on my laptop.

on a positive note, the graphics card (according to my 13 yo) is excellent cuz he can now play medal of honor w/o the computer lagging or the game refusing to load.

Yes, virtually every browser is better than IE

Mozilla is wonderful
When I first heard about it I was skeptical but one of the firs things I did when I took this machine out of the box was load mozilla. I can't live without it now.

The audio driver(s) that came with Vista blow chunks. I have a notebook, so my speakers are already puny and insipid...I never have been able to listen to music at a volume I like, but since "upgrading" to Vista, the max volume is a joke, and I can't find a way to get around it. It's so quiet that listening to music while there is *anything* else going on at the same time is impossible. It's bad enough that I just won't listen to music anymore, and that makes me sad. I hope that as more people get and use Vista, there will be more/different drivers put out, but it really sucks.


I'm really hoping that the next major virus to get massive circulation will be called "Hasta La Vista".

Wow I thought it was just me

I have a desk top and of course I have speakers
I thought the master volume was just set too low then I realized, after setting it to max, that even with my speakers to max it is still hard to hear

i haven't noticed a problem with the audio. perhaps it's the computer and not vista? cuz kid still plays his music too loud. even with the dishwasher and tv going and me in the other room, his music is louder than all of it.

I'm pretty sure that it's Vista that is the problem, because I had no real complaints until we "upgraded" and installed it on the notebook. It's *all* the audio- CD's, radio, movies, music videos...everything. It's a bit better if you listen with headphones on, but not much.

OMG, you guys have just unwittingly started my son's next-year Uni project! He was thinking it was just uni computer studies geeks who hate vista - you're the start of a HUGE research project!
