help with a new mac

Post by claire » Tue Feb 20, 2007 7:17 am

i got a new macbook today
and its all very spiffy
but my problem is with msn

i don't have an hotmail or msn email account but rather a gmail
and i downloaded messange for mac
but it just doesn't accept my email.

i do have a passport/live account and i can log onto other websites and everything

its just msn

i was wondering if someone could offer some advice or help before i made a fool of myself in front of my uni's tech support.

thanks

what msn client do you use? the one you get from microsoft directly or an all-in-one client like adium or fire?

sometimes the all-in-one clients don't like accepting gmail stuff.

also is the live/passport address the same as your gmail?
there is, in the end, the letting go.

i don't really understand what your talking about :o

i downloaded msn for mac
from some website
and did all the loading stuff and applicationally things etc etc

then i open it and try to sign in and get told that i cant.

i don't care what i use, as long as it works ... and i can talk to people

and yes my passport account is my gmail account.

i thoguth maybe it was cos i was using my uni's wireless connection. but then everyone else can use it. its just me.

whats this adium?

adium is a chat interface that allows you to use any of your chat clients (or all of them) at the same time. for example, i have aol instant messenger, yahoo instant messenger, skype, and msn instant messenger. instead of having to launch all of those chat clients, i can launch adium (it's own program) and chat with all my buddies from all my different chat clients at the same time.

now, back to your situation...are you able to log on to the internet on that machine? (i assume so, cause you are posting here)

and you say you signed up for a microsoft messenger account w/ a user name and password, but you still cannot log on? is that right?

your mac should come with a program called ichat. can you try making a log on and password and chatting with that?? see if that works? if you have an aol instant messenger account, you can use it with ichat.

first let's see if that works, and then we'll tackle the next steps

pm me if you have any questions about how to set this up, k?

did you get this mac new? or used. if new, there is no setting that you need to change in order to be able to chat. i suggest you take it to a mac store and ask a mac genius to help you.

Are your msn internet settings are the same as your network settings? It may be that msn is unable to connect to the internet. Also, are you running the latest version of msn? In particular, if you use a proxy server, you will have to change you internet prefs in msn.

take care and good luck,

No hugs, thanks
