Customizing bus

Post by sine nomine » Mon Sep 18, 2006 1:58 pm

Languages
There are a few different language packs you can use with BUS. This is a feature you can change in your profile. Language packs do not translate posts for you, but they do translate the default phpBB stuff. Some people prefer to browse the board at least partially in their first language, others change the settings for fun, or even for a bit more privacy when browsing in a public place.
Deb will consider installing more language packs by request.

<b>the languages we have right now are:</b>
Danish
English
Finnish
French
German
Japanese
Norwegian
Polish
Spanish
Spanish (Argentina)
Swedish

A full list of available languages is at http://www.phpbb.com/downloads.php#lang

We apologize that some of the language packs have errors, we didn't write 'em!
If you want online translation help, you may find <a href="http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en" target="new window">Google Language Tools</a> to be helpful. The translation isn't that good, but it can translate a whole page. There is also a FireFox extension called FoxLingo; right click on a page and you'll get a menu of languages to translate the page into.

Ignoring Other Users
This isn't something we recommend, but we do realize that every one in a while you really can't handle seeing someone else's posts on the board. If you feel like you must ignore someone else (not see their posts at all), we've posted directions for installing a FireFox script that makes it possible.

Choosing a Board Theme
There are a couple different ways that you can view BUS. To select these different options, go to your profile, and scroll down to where it says "board style". The default theme is called subSilver. The other themes you can choose from are Access (a easy-to-read theme with larger fonts for people who are visually impaired, or have a hard time reading the other themes), Chrome_ex, Diddle, Quiddich, subBlack, Subza, and VereorMenInBlack. There are a lot of different themes available for phpBB, but we don't want to install too many because it makes it harder for us to update the security of BUS and add more cool features. We hope you can find one you like from the options we have available.

If you want to preview themes without having to edit your profile each time, <a href="http://buslist.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php? ... 3468">this post</a> explains how.

Customizing Your Date Display
You can customize how dates look when you log in.
The default is day month year time (24 hour clock).
In your profile, there's a field called 'date format'. It has something that looks like this: d M Y H:i
You change it by changing these codes. Here's a list of the codes you can use:
Day of the week
  • D - day of the week, textual, 3 letters; e.g. "Fri"
  • w - day of the week, numeric, i.e. "0" (Sunday) to "6" (Saturday)
  • l (lowercase 'L') - day of the week, textual, long; e.g. "Friday"
Day of the month
  • d - day of the month, 2 digits with leading zeros; i.e. "01" to "31"
  • j - day of the month without leading zeros; i.e. "1" to "31"
  • S - English ordinal suffix for the day of the month, 2 characters; i.e. "st", "nd", "rd" or "th"
Month
  • F - month, textual, long; e.g. "January"
  • m - month; i.e. "01" to "12"
  • M - month, textual, 3 letters; e.g. "Jan"
  • n - month without leading zeros; i.e. "1" to "12"
Year
  • Y - year, 4 digits; e.g. "1999"
  • y - year, 2 digits; e.g. "99"
Time
  • g - hour, 12-hour format without leading zeros; i.e. "1" to "12"
  • G - hour, 24-hour format without leading zeros; i.e. "0" to "23"
  • h - hour, 12-hour format; i.e. "01" to "12"
  • H - hour, 24-hour format; i.e. "00" to "23"
  • i - minutes; i.e. "00" to "59"
  • s - seconds; i.e. "00" to "59"
  • a - "am" or "pm"
  • A - "AM" or "PM"
  • O - Difference to Greenwich time in hours; e.g. "+0200"
Misc
  • r - RFC 822 formatted date; e.g. "Thu, 21 Dec 2000 16:01:07 +0200"
  • z - day of the year; i.e. "0" to "365"
You can add text, but any letters have to have a \ before them.

What if you don't find your answer here?
Try looking at the post <a href="http://buslist.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=95893" target="new window">Special board features & How to use them</a>. It explains avatars, signatures, usergroups, the photo gallery, and HTML and BBCode. Another good place to look for answers is in the <a href="http://buslist.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=2028215" target="new window">BUS FAQ</a>. It addresses a lot of technical questions both about BUS in particular, and phpBB in general.
And remember - it's always OK to ask questions, that's what the <a href="http://buslist.org/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=5" target="new window">administrivia forum</a> is here for.
