How do I put a link to another thread into a post ?

It's something I've never done and I think it might be something I need to know how to do.

Well, first of all, if you just type a web address into your post, without any tags or anything, the board software will recognise the http part and make it into a link. e.g http://www.google.co.uk/

A bit more hi-tech, is if you want a word to be the link. Then you can use

to get <a href="http://www.google.co.uk/">Google</a>

As far as linking to threads is concerned, you can get the web address you need from the url box on your browser, or by rightclicking on a link and choosing "Copy link". You'll notice that sometimes the link has "t=" and some number: that's a link to the whole thread starting at page 1. Sometimes the link has "p=" which means it links to a particular post in the the thread.

For example, http://buslist.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=84313 links to the BBCode and HTML post in this forum, and http://buslist.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php? ... 50#2019050 links to Chey's reply on that same thread.

PS there's also a way to do it using BBCode; I've told you the HTML way.
PPS Not many people know this, but to get the link to a specific <i>post</i>, you can right click the little picture like <img src="http://buslist.org/phpBB/templates/subS ... nipost.gif" /> at its top left.

BBCode makes it fairly easy for you. As Laura said, you can either just copy and past the code into the text, or if you want to create a hyperlink here's what you do! (I've disabled code in my post to show you exactly)

[url]http://www.google.com[/url]

If you wanted to creat a link you'd do something like this

[url=http://www.google.com]google[/url]

Bloody hell K, that sounds like when my son is trying to explain computers to me!!!!

Silent_scream told me a really, really easy way. Open 2 windows to bus, so you can flick from one to the other. On one, you'll have the post/pm you're writing, on the other, the original post/thread you want to link to. On the original, just click on the address at the top of the page (that starts with http://buslist, www.*** etc) to highlight it, then press Ctrl and C. That means you've copied the address/link.

Then go to your original post/pm, place the cursor where you want the link to show up - right-click, and select "paste" from the pop-up menu. That's it! If you want to check it's worked (I always do, am a bit anal about things like that! ) choose Preview for your message, and click the link. It should take you straight back to the thread you're wanting to link to.

The fancy stuff - like ppl saying "this thread" and it takes you there... nfi. But the above is a simple way of linking. It must be, it works for me.
