I can't see them either. It seems to happen sometimes. They sort of come back when they feel like it ;)

it seems to be there now
"Knew what cats know that makes them scream like babies in night.Looked at sky through smoke heavy with human fat and god was not there. The cold, suffocating dark goes on forever, and we are alone.Live our lives, lacking anything better to do.Devise reason later.Born from oblivion;bear children, hellbound as ourselves;go into oblivion. There is nothing else.Existence is random.Has no pattern save what we imagine after staring at it for too long.No meaning save what we choose to impose."

They're always there for me...

I got the impression that he hosts them off a PC at home. For people that aren't "in the know", so to speak, an internet site is stored on a computer somewhere (normally a server), that computer being connected to the internet. If he wants to turn his PC off... then we lose the counters. Until he turns his PC back on.

Hey,

I just remembered that I'm hosting the counters when I checked the log files.

So, I'll answer the questions that seem to be popping up:

1. They do go up and down - they're hosted on my home internet connection (good call Deskana ;)) which is really pushing the limits of what it can really do. I'm moving my sites out to a new server on a nice fat internet connection in the near future though, so they should be more reliable.

2. For the last day or so I've been rebuilding the server, because the main hard disk went and died on me. Which sucks majorly - yet another reason to get on with sorting out a new box.

Is the code open source - i.e. could you make it available so those of us with the inclination (and technical knowhow, and spare server space with bandwidth to cope!) could perhaps try hosting it ourselves? I have webspace hosted by a friend with unlimited storage and a bandwidth allowance of 100GB a month that could handle running something like the SI counter easily.

No hugs for me please unless asked for - hugs are always available for others though! :-)

Is there an ETA on when we get our counters back?

I'm sure Jon will let us know when its all up and running again.

In the meantime, what about doing an "SI free since..." in your signature ? It'll allow you to keep track of things in the absence of Jon's nifty counter :)

I miss my counter, too!!!

Is there any way that you could integrate something like this into the phpBB system you're running on? vBulletin has a function like this?
Of course I'm out of my mind -- it's dark and scary in there!
