Questions about my own FTP Server

Post by guest11 » Sun Mar 27, 2005 11:14 pm

Right, I've created an FTP server that runs off my laptop (Using a program called 'Serv-U') and I've found out through a test that I can link images from the FTP server to a website like this... eg...

Code: Select all

That's a made-up IP incase you couldn't guess ;)

I was wondering if it was possible to display the image from my FTP server without broadcasting my IP all over the web. Because if you right clicked on the image and selected properties it showed you the URL of the image, complete with my IP. I mean, I run a firewall, but I don't much like the idea that they could just go and access the files in the FTP folder without a password. Sure, I've set it up so that it doesn't let them leave that folder, but I don't think that'd stop someone who was determined to hack it...

Is it possible?

Thanks.

And on a side point... if I was to buy a domain to use instead of my IP address and I hosted the FTP off my laptop... would it be a one off fee for the domain, or a constant yearly payment or something?

You can't really run a server from your box without giving out your IP - even if you have a domain pointing at it, it only takes a single command to get an IP from it. A domain is just a way of making it easier to get to an IP - for example www.jellybob.co.uk says "go to the box at 81.187.181.130 for this site".

Depending on what type of domain you buy, it costs different amounts, but they are all yearly/other periodly charges. Off hand I know a .uk is £14.99/2 years from simply.com - top level .com, .org etc. is about twice that per year.

You're probably better off renting some server space from somewhere - 34sp.com were good in the past when I was using them.

Or of course you could e-mail jon@instance-design.co.uk for an extremely competitive (read: free) quote ;)

I see a small white box with a red square, a green (I think) circle and a blue triangle. Except when it's being a red X. Either way, even my imagination can't turn that into a weird looking man (unless he's very weird looking). Sorry.

A white box with a red square, green circle and blue triangle. I've got no idea why it should display that! It's nowhere in the folder on my harddrive.

Looks to me like you connected to the server and it decided that the file you were looking for didn't exist. Interesting.

Someone's browser kept sending the server the command...

ŸÔŸÒABOR

And it got it quite confused for a minute.

Great, it works. Turns out the reason it wasn't working because it wasn't held at ftp://81.97.123.112/terry.jpg but ftp://81.97.123.112/FTP/terry.jpg Human error ;)

Amazing to think that those images are being loaded off my harddrive everytime someone loads this page.

You won't be able to load them up anymore. You might see them if they're still in your cache.
