personalizing welcome PMs

I just got a very positive response thanking me for my PM to one of yesterday's newbies.
Yay!
One thing that I think helped is my pm to her/him was personalized ... the others I sent were generic. How do you personalize pms to people you don't know though? In this case the unusual username helped.
Anyway, just wondered if anyone had any thoughts.

If there have been no posts I use everything they give me
If a location is used I go with that
Their interests as well
It is very nifty if they happen to have a website listed
It is usually a journal btu that helps loads.
If I have none of that I generally tell them a bit baout me so they can feel a little more comfortable
I don't do a generic kind of thing
That's just me

Yeah, the generic thing doesn't feel good to me. Thanks for the suggestions!

ditto, i go with a template and add stuff (well, i went the one time i've done it so far)
sometimes i couldn't add anything, but if htere was location i used that, or name comments (particularly if its music related or something i can talk about), interests or website.
in my template is a bit about me. i think its nice to include something like that, less anonymous...
