I agree. I'd like to see a bit more structure in terms of what we'd like to do (PM to newbies, responding to first threads, etc), when it should be done by, who is willing to commit to a rota, etc.
It don't know how other people do it, but I have an all-purpose welcome that I cut and paste (change the name of course), and if the person has already posted threads I just look at them quickly and try to add a personalized comment. It doesn't take long to do five, ten welcomes this way.
And people do appreciate welcomes - I get PMs telling me so. And sometimes people have questions they'd like to ask about bus, they appreciate having a name to talk to, you know?
Cheers,

LBC

I agree that it would be a great help if more people would be willing to commit.
I have been working on just that issue for some time and I hope to bring a couple things to the table in the next few days.
I don't do a whole lot of the copy paste thing with pm's only because what I send it about half the time personalized according to posts that ahd been made or what not.
I also don't put too much info in the pm because they just received a ton of stuff with rules and FAQ's when they registered.
Generally it is a hello, I noticed you said whatever it is and I wanted to say welcome and what not
I then offer to answer any questions, concerns or whatever else they may have .
It takes time btu it is true it means loads to someone who has no name as a resource for questions.

I can keep doing it the way I was before
When I see a newbie I will send a pm.
I have all the time in the world in the evening so sending out several pm's is no problem
No worries about tuesday and thursday
I am always here

I can definitely do Wednesdays (you needed that day covered, Mab?) and will do welcomes as I see they need done.
If the three of us just send a few when we can, we should be able to cover it.

I can cover Monday.

I would have loved a welcome pm when I joined, so I think this is a great idea to make it more structured!

Hello World.

I'll put my hand up for helping out. Tuesday or thursday is a tough one though. Thursday is a T day, which means I have less time, but its something less taxing that I could do even if a bit wobbly. I'll say Tuesdays for now, but am flexible.
Just one thing, I'm in Australia, and time here is ahead of most of you (I think Claire is in the same time zone as I am). If I take Tuesday and start doing things, that might hit on the same time Nika is doing Monday. I'm sure these things will be worked out with time, but I just wanted to give a heads up on that in case things seem odd later.

If you need any others - I can and would be happy to do any day.
Or even "holiday cover"

One day I will not think...I will just be...

The reason I mentioned the time zone thing, is because if you're like me and take ages constructing a PM, I'd probably start one and then someone will have come along and written ten of them in that period of time

or if I get in too early, then the day before person won't have any to do.
I'm sure the wrinkles will sort out as we see how it goes.

Stupid question time - are we PMing ALL newbies or waiting till they have made their first post?

I'd like to volunteer for PM's I can do any day that you need someone to fill.
Sorry, haven't been very active the last few days so I didn't notice this thread.

Copying intended names into the thread then taking time sounds like a good plan

Thanks Mab.
Mab wrote:PMing all newbies, it seems to help them to get posting

One thing to remember is that new people on the Memberlist may not have their accounts activated yet, so if they don't post or reply too soon it could just be that they're not active yet. I guess the PM waits for them?
