stop hair pulling?

Post by magdalena » Sat Jan 21, 2006 5:39 am

i have a bad habit of tweezing hair, such as from my legs or around my belly button. i tried putting bandaids over areas, but it just didn't work. i threw my tweezers away, but my mom has hers in our bathroom and every time i go in i do it. it's so annoying. i don't know why. is there anything else i can do to try and stop it? sometimes if i'm in there just to go to the bathroom, i close my eyes. but it doesn't always work.

i hate to say this, but maybe trying to find out your triggers?

*why do you do it?
*does anything make you more likely to do it?
*does anything make you less likely to do it?
*what do you gain from it?
*what else can give you that?
*do you have enough support?
*is there someone you can call

sorry im not much use. i know going trying to figure it out in backwards steps is a tough one. hope you can find something to help

it's weird. it's just like a bad habit. like cracking your knuckles or biting your nails. only this one is weird. it started to be more of a problem a little while after i started meds. i might ask my psychiatrist about this, but i get really nervous around him and tend to not tell him as much as i should.

nothing really triggers it. i just do it. i mean, i'm usually not thinking about much when i'm just going to the bathroom, you know? haha.

I'm curious about this too, because I tend to have the same problem. It doesn't bug me too much, but it is a little annoying when I get side-tracked from what I'm supposed to be doing because I started pulling out hairs randomly.

I pull hairs from my arms and legs sometimes, and I have a habit of plucking stray hairs from my eyebrows at least everyday. If I'm sitting and watching a movie or something, I will automatically just start doing it... I can't seem to help it.
So this is the new year - and I don't feel any different...

Hey. I do this. It's a condtion called Trichotillomania (pronounced try-ko-till-oh-mania) normally shortened down to trich (pronounced as trick) There's been some research into it- I could waffle on for hours on stuff I've learnt. I've been doing it since I was about 8, I'm now 16. I suggest you do a google search, but the site I recommend most is www.trichotillomania.co.uk as well as a therapy that does really work, and lots of other suggestions and information about trich, the message forum is really helpful, and friendly.
Like you guys, I don't know why I do it- it's just something I do, I just do it, and face the consequences later on. Sometimes my emotions trigger me, like when I'msad, or if my eyes itch, otehr times I just do it. Drives me mad.
Sorry, I'm waffling now. Anyways, anymore questions and I'm happy to try and help. RQ.xXx.

I've always wondered if what I do would be considered Trichotillomania... and I'm still not really sure (I don't pull when I'm upset, it's just more of a compulsive thing - and I rarely pull from my head and eyelashes). But after reading some of the stories on that site, I really feel less weird about it.
It's conforting in a way to know that someone else out there has the same habits as you...

I also randomly remembered pulling out my eyelashes when I was a child. I have never thought about that... but I now can remember clearly pulling them out from both eyes at the same time.
So this is the new year - and I don't feel any different...
