Reward system or tricking yourself

Post by eccentricfuzzyme » Wed Sep 21, 2011 3:23 am

I am wondering if anyone else ever used alternative means to stop themselves from harming when they wanted. Of course, ideally, it would be enough to use logic and reason and emotional maturity and self care to say we wont do it because it is bad for us, but sometimes that just is not enough.
I would sometimes try other things. Like buy a bunch of nice clothes that would show off the area I often harmed. Or do a reward system for myself based on the length of time I went without harming. So if I lasted 2 weeks, say, I would buy myself some new boots or something, or take myself out to dinner. So if at a week and a half i wanted to cut, sometimes that extra motivation was enough to tip the scales.

sounds good to me, the more time you get without si'ing, means you are developing coping mechanisms and you are getting thru the tough times.

I think rewarding yourself and planning treats quite often is a great way to help stop si. It is likely needed to counteract the urge to punish or the "sensible" part of you saying you shouldn't be careless with money or time.
