dissociating?

Post by xmcrx37 » Mon May 14, 2007 4:23 am

I dont get it, its like your lifeline to reality has suddenly been cut off. Your in the kitchen one minute and 5 later your upstairs. It's just odd. Ive heard other people experience this but why?

It's a way your body has come up with to cope with certain feelings/ situations.

Everyone does it to some extent. Someone is very bored in class and they kind of "zone out" a little.

Your body has decided it can't cope at the moment with feeling anxious/ upset/ triggered/ down/ whatever, and it kind of shuts off for a while.

Some people miss time (like you've described), or feel like they are floating above themselves, or feel distant, or feel kind of drunk without the good part, or reality seems very warped in some way like distance and time isn't constant. Or thoughts/ feelings come from outside of yourself rather than from within.

The way to fight it is to deal with the feelings behind it. Work out why you're feeling badly. I dissociate most when my anxiety levels are very high when I'm at university or particularly stressed. I find that when I'm tired or drowsy from alcohol or a medication it's a lot LOT worse.

If I'm aware I'm dissociating to some extent I can fight it and try to appear normal and focused. Or I can try some anti-anxiety type mechanisms like breathing or doing stretches til they hurt so they "bring me back".

Do you have a therapist/ doctor you could mention this to? You're very vulnerable if you're "blacking out" like that. I was actually hit by a car once. You need to keep yourself safe.

Losing time or dissocating is a scary thing. I have to say sometimes I think I am crazy but other times I just think I need to to sparate myself. The only thing is I would like a choice in when I do lose time. The last time I lost time was when I was driving to Work and started out fine but then I was at work and I don`t know how I GOT THEIR OR WHEN I STARTED TO STEP AWAY FROM ME. I AM TRYING TO BE GENTLE WITH MYSELF AND SEE WHAT START THEM BUT NOT ALWAYS CAN I FIND THE POINT I LEFT. I DON`T MIND BEING BEHIND THE WALL BUT SEEING EVERYTHING IT WHEN I LEAVE THAT IT SCARES ME. I ALWAY WONDER WHAT HAPPEN TO MY BODY AND WHO`S IN CHARGE OF IT. I DON`T THINK I HAVE MULTIPLY PERSONALILTIES BECAUSE I NEVER HAVE STRANGE THINGS IN MY CLOSET OR WONDER WHEN I BUY SOMETHING. I CAN ALWAYS REMEMBER A LITTLE ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE SO I AM SURE I AM ONLY ONE PERSONALITY IN MY BODY BUT SOMETIME I WORRY ABOUT THAT ALSO.
