Su doku

Recently I've got really into doing su doku's, and I've found them really useful distractions for when I'm feeling like I want to SI, so thought I would share it with you guys as hopefully someone else might find them useful too.

I've found they are a great way to focus my mind on something else as I won't stop doing it until I've finished it... so I make a promise to myself that I won't SI until after I've finshed my su doku, and by that time the urge has usually passed.

Its always worked for me so far as I always need something concrete to focus on to beat urges, and this is a perfect distraction.

I should probably have explained that part.... sorry!! I knew I had to add something else before I hit send.

Basically, it is a grid 9x9 split up into 9 boxes, which are 3x3... which looks like: <center>

I think the game is orginally from Japanese origin, but I'm not sure.

On the grid you get some of the numbers given to you before you start off.

The object is to get each line- vertically and horizontally to contain the numbers 1 to 9 without repeating itself. You also have to make it so that each 3x3 box also has the numbers 1-9 in. There are loads which vary in difficulty, so can take anything from a few minutes if you're really good, or hours if you're a beginner or not very logical like me.

In the UK, most newspapers publish at least one daily. I'm not sure about anywhere else in the world though, but you can get loads on the internet here to either do online or print off. It also explains the rules, and tactics, in a much more logical way than what I have done!

They are really cool, I've only started doing them in the last few weeks, but I've got ever so into them now. You dont have to be good at maths to do them, only be able to count 1-9 (which I keep getting stuck on...)

These are good puzzles to do as a distraction. I find if I get into it then my concentration is totally on the puzzle. They seem to be a bit of a craze at the moment.

The one I tried to do yesterday was really hard. But they're usually a 10-15 minute job.

Yes, I believe they're japanese - they have symbols for words instead of letters, so they can't have crosswords. So you get sodoku instead.

Hmm, that's interesting about symbols instead of letters. Makes sense. Sudoku (even though frustrating) I find much more relaxing than a crossword.

A lot of the people in my year are very into this, there are some that are asking for electronic su duko for their christmas presents and there was one girl a couple of weeks ago who brought in a su duko with a mix of letters and numbers because she had done all the ones she could find with numbers

I love those. My geomatry teach made us do them and I was the only one who could. I felt so smart.

Anyway, they are VERY distracting though I havent used them in place of si yet.

Yay! I love those too.

For me things like this are perfect because my urges come when I let my mind rest. In a way I suppose that's bad because I'm constantly staying busy trying to fight it off; but I guess that it's good too because it's easier to distract myself...

until I try to go to sleep, but that's another story.

Anyway - I printed off some to do before I sleep tonightl\.

you are partly right. but they were actually developed in the 18th century by a swiss man. he adapted them from the latin square.

they became popular in japan in the 1980's (i think) as a type of crossword, yes becuase they have symbols for words instead of letters. so they use sodoku instead. and yes, the word soduko is japanese.

and now they are taking over the world and appear daily in most newspapers, on the internet nd you can buy little books.

and yes, i love sodukos... tee hee

I'm terrible at them though, I'm on like number fifteen and my mom has done over 60 of them! She's a math whiz though, I never seemed to pick up that gene.

theres different ones like ones with 1-9 and A, B, C (12x12 grids), kakuro (given a number, you have to place what numbers make up that number), 4x4 grids, 6x6 grids, 8x8 grids, and theres a few where theres more than one sudoku grid overlapping. theyre irritating as hell
