Memory Holes

Post by scrappy » Thu May 12, 2005 6:43 am

Hello An(ever)yone,
I'm mostly a big time lurker but I've hit a snag, of sorts. Is there anyone out there with memory lapses, like most of your childhood, that you can't account for? Anyone found any successful ways of re-invigorating those memories.
I'm finding it hard to heal an abyss. And I'm pretty sure my imagination is off the scale of reality. Any ideas?
Oh yeah, questioining anyone alive during my childhood is out of the question. Tried that and everyone's story is so different and juxtaposed against the other, without my true memory, I could go crazy trying to decipher what their words "really mean".
Without true memory, sometimes I feel like I'm just waging war on everything. I'm really working hard to narrow my scope.
*si* free/1 year.
some days harder than others.
I may be posting this in the wrong place. All responses will be appreciated.
Namaste.

Hi.

I haven't seen you post before (although you've been a member longer than I have :o), so Welcome to bus. It is wonderful to know you can reach out here when you're looking for help [and you've posted in the right place :)]

I have a lot of trouble remembering my childhood. There are little things I'll recall, but most of it is a big blank. I've tried asking my parents, and my older siblings, but no one can tell me much. I'm a bit disappointed about that, because I want to know and understand where I've come from.

One of the problems with memory in general is that its subjective. There is no one truth that you could get to. Your memory, and anyone elses, is affected by your biases - thats why asking people around you gives you different answers.

Chances are that you do have memories there, but they aren't available to you now. That doesn't mean they're bad or that you've blocked them, just that old memories can be hard to pull up. Sometimes talking about what you do remember can help bring things back. Sometimes memories will come back on their own when you see/hear/smell something that reminds you of a time long ago.

Why do you feel you need to bring these things up now ?

- Mallie.

I don't know how old you are but I had virtualy no memory of anything before I was nine. I am thirty now and some memories have been coming back, but it is slow and they are fragmented. I do wish you luck with figuring it out, but to be honest I wish I did not remember anything, the stuff that is coming back went away for a reason (in my case anyway). If you do remember I hope it is happy stuff.

My memory of ages 5-9 is pretty complete (and 3-5 is surprisingly clear given my age at the time). 10-12 is really spotty for me though, even though is was only 5-7 years ago. Over time though some memories come back, sort of randomly. Do you pictures from your childhood? Do you still live in the same house, or can you visit it? Sometimes putting yourself visually back in the context of your childhood can help. Anyhow, sorry I don't have any brilliant adivce. Take care.

go play in a sandbox and watch cartoons?
maybe go to the beach and run from the waves?
finger paint?
make really sweet kool-aid?
eat a candy bar and get it all over your face?
take a bath and still have dirt on you forearms when you get out?
cry when soap gets in your eyes?
take a nap when you don't want to?
wear sleepers with feet in them(your feet)

Large gaps myself.
Every once in a while I remember something but I can't say there is any definite way that works.
It just happens from time to time
