an odd coping strategy, but it made me feel better

tips on how to cope: dealing with your feelings, dealing with the consequences of self-harm in your life. share your ideas and maybe pick up some new skills, too. you don't have to want to stop to learn something new here.

an odd coping strategy, but it made me feel better

Post by Boris » Wed Oct 06, 2004 7:39 pm

i've been having urges to cut for the past while now (i've been free without slips for a couple of months!!!) and i'm trying VERY hard to stay free.
yesterday in biology class we were doing a lab that involved osmosis into potato cells, and i found a very random coping strategy, but it really worked despite how peculiar it is.

especially if you like to cut words it's good.

take a raw potato and chop it into a few pieces. use your tools to carve into the potato whatever you'd cut into yourself. i don't know if this would work but maybe you could even use food colouring if you need to see blood?
for me it's not wanting blood, it's the action of the cutting, and the potato has the perfect texture for that.

i was supposed to be just carving numbers into my potato pieces so that i can recognize which piece is which...but i stole a second potato and really went to town with it!

and i felt much better after i did that.

(btw that potato's still in my locker, and that's a problem given that i'm sick and won't be back at school in a while, and i don't know what happens when you leave a chopped up potato in a locker for a long time....)

...long enough without slips that I've lost track. We can all get there, one way or another!

LOL!! I'm sure the potato will be fine.
That's a really cool strategy; we have millions of potatoes.
Thanks!!

That sounds like fun too - by the way I think you will have to clear up the potato when you get back though :) Maybe take another one to replace it :)

I've tried that with other things, but nothing felt right. I tried strawberries because they're red, but they're way too soft. Potatoes would be good!

potatoes can also be dirt cheap, i think.

i must've put my potato somewhere other than my locker, or it's been completley buried inside and isn't smelling yet...because i went back to school for it today and i couldn't find it.

oh well.
