What's YOUR plan for when you can't get on BUS? [Read Please

Post by Spidey » Wed Aug 23, 2006 11:52 pm

Sometimes due to circumstances beyond your control (or within your control) - you can't get on the board. Either because it goes down, the Internet screwed up, your computer screwed up or the board is down for general maintenance, you just can't get on.

There are many bussers who rely on this board to get them through their most difficult times. While it is good that you rely on this board, you have to make some kind of contingency plan of what to do until the board goes back up if you're in crisis / having a difficult time / need the board for whatever reason under the sun.

So, I ask you -- What's YOUR plan for when you can't access the board?

If it helps to start the topic, here's my plan:

For times I can't access the board, and I really need it, I:

- Try to use the DBT skills I know to get to the problem
- Call / IM one of my friends
- Pet my cats
- Talk to my family
- Watch TV or DVD's
- Listen to music
- Drive around
- Do things I've been procrastinating on doing
- Sleep

That's just what I do for those who need an example - so...

What is YOUR plan for when you can't get on BUS?

Sometimes I find it helpful to write in word what I would normally post on bus, and save it for posting later.

It's awesome when you go back to post it, read your words again, and realise you've moved on from that place & dealt with things on your own.

Otherwise IM'ing friends from bus helps a lot.

Or taking the down time to do look around secret shame and maybe find out some things I didn't think about before.

constructive stuff:
:star: catch up on the laundry (soothing, repetitive task--I can fold laundry in front of the TV)
:star: clean up around the house
:star: back up the files on my laptop...this may be painful for some people but I don't really mind it :)
:star: do the dishes
:star: plan outfits for the next few days

personal fun stuff:
:blkstar: draw pictures
:blkstar: spend time with my cats--brush them, pet them, clip their nails...
:blkstar: do japanese calligraphy (very cool--it's artistic, and I can choose a word like "endure" or "tranquility," something thematic :-) )
:blkstar: make pixel art or computer graphics
:blkstar: play piano/keyboard
:blkstar: write songs, lyrics, or poetry
:blkstar: get outside--take a walk, pick some flowers to press, take photos
:blkstar: make music playlists/mix CDs of favorite songs

if worst comes to worst:
:redstar: find one of my family members, explain that I am feeling bad and ask them if we can cuddle up and watch a movie or something
:redstar: call my therapist
:redstar: if I get urgey--cut up paper, draw on my arm, sing (singing angsty rock songs helps me feel better :emlaugh:)
Please be gentle with me.

Tonight, actually the connection is screwy with my cable and internet. When it messed up the last time, I put my ipod on shuffle and drew. When the doodle seemed finished I played Minesweeper :)

This is a great thread for me right now...my computer keeps shutting down on me, and we don't know what's wrong with it and can't afford to have it looked at right now. So online time is getting rare around here. I'm lucky I managed to coax the box to run at all today. It could shut down any second.

I've got a little over 30 days si free, but lately I've been having some crisis moments, as I call them. (It's probably not really a crisis, but I feel upset about something, then the desire to si hits me, and THEN it becomes a crisis. I make my own crisis moments. )

Once in the middle of the night...my brain woke me up JUST to try to get me to cut...sheesh...I couldn't get on the computer and my emergency box was in the bedroom and I didn't want to wake up my husband. So I made lists. For about an hour, I think. Lists of everything and nothing. I had a grocery list, a things to do list, a things NOT to do list, a list of wishes, a list of fears, a list of books I want to read, a list of colors I like and colors I don't like, a list of my favorite words...etc., ad infinitum. I had to think about what I was doing and that sort of pushed the urge out of my head. Once I felt better I went back to bed.

But that doesn't always happen, and I'm scared to death that my brain will fritz out on me and I'll forget/block out all my coping tools...or I'll go into one of those fugue moments when I don't really know what I'm doing...

I guess lately what I've done when I can't get online and my sponsor's not available is simply to keep moving. It's harder to hit a moving target, and if I don't slow down the thoughts can't keep up, I figure. I clean, dance, walk, challenge the dog to a tug of war, or sometimes just pace in a circle in the living room. Anything just to keep moving. I know that sounds manic, but hey...I AM bipolar, so if the disorder fits...
Be patient. 36 years is a long time to keep a secret.

It's official! The parts have finally arrived and I am now a complete moron.

Yesterday when the board was down, I played in my backyard with my dogs. Stayed out there so long I am sun BURNT today. Anyway, just the most stress free thing I could think of to do, playing with them out there, but still.. I felt kinda lost and sad and a little worried too.

My plan is pretty much the same as the one I apply when I'm really busy and have no time to be here:

-reading
-watching TV/DVDs
-talking to friends
-socialising with friends
-taking some 'me' time
-looking after my cats
-playing with my DS
-focusing on one of my other projects a bit more
