A long time ago I used to be a visitor to this site. Somehow today, a long chain of random events incited me to visit again. I was forced to register. I did not find what I hoped I might; a maturity of sorts. In any case, I would like to un-register. Could somebody tell me where to find the button, please?

I don't think that there is a "button".
The easiest way is to contact one of the admins (splitimage, ChaseThisLight and jomomma are particularly active ATM), asking that your username be deactivated.
