Do not automatically parse URLs???

What does the term "Do not automatically parse URLs" mean and what is the function. I tried a little bit of googling but could not find a clear answer of what it ment. I was wondering if someone could explain it thanks!

if you type in a url without that checked, it converts the url to a link. i think if you check it, it doesn't make the link.
